Akademie Street Boutique Hotel

Nine suites, four pools and a breakfast with a reputation. Dinner is a stroll away.

Akademie Street, Franschhoek village · $$$

A personal favourite and one we know well: nine suites spread across Cape Dutch cottages in the middle of Franschhoek village, with four pools, wood-fired hot tubs and a garden that does its best to keep you from leaving. Small enough for a leadership team or private celebration to fill most of it, with a lounge for drinks receptions and late dinners under the garden pergola on request. The village restaurants are a stroll away, which is exactly why the kitchen here only does breakfast. Our favourite detail: the two floor lamps in the orangery came from the operating theatre where Dr Christiaan Barnard performed the world's first human heart transplant, in Cape Town in 1967.

Good to know

With nine suites, the whole property suits a small leadership team or a private party, and the hotel takes group bookings in any configuration, with low-key conference facilities. The lounge works for an evening drinks reception, and late-night dining can be arranged under the pergola in the garden on request; otherwise formal dining is breakfast only, so plan dinners in the village, which is within walking distance. The Franschhoek Wine Tram, which follows the old branch line between wine estates, makes an easy group day. Babies and children under 16 are not accommodated. Bookings need a 50% deposit, with a full refund only if cancelled at least one calendar month before arrival. Winter specials run from June to August, when underfloor heating and wood-burning stoves come into their own.
